Pinckney family papers, 1694-1847.

Papers consist primarily of correspondence of members of the Pinckney, Lowndes, and related families, but also include receipts, accounts, land papers, and other items. Correspondence represents a wide array of subject matter including family and social affairs, politics, agriculture and technology, business and financial matters, plantation affairs, and travel. Correspondents include Rawlins Lowndes, Thomas Pinckney, Harriott Pinckney Horry, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, Harriett Pinckney Rutledge, William Lowndes, Elizabeth P. Huger, Benjamin H. Latrobe, and many others. Included is a letter (1798) from Elizabeth B. Lowndes regarding planting conditions at El Dorado Plantation; letter books (1763-1767, 1786-1787) of Harriott P. Horry; a letter (1794) to Thomas Pinckney from an American in a British debtors' prison; letters from Sarah E. Huger in New York (N.Y.) about Duncan Phyfe furniture; and a letter (24 June 1838) from Rebecca M. Rutledge to her husband Edward Cotesworth Rutledge concerning the death of family members in the wreck of the ship Pulaski. Receipts, mostly those of Rawlins Lowndes, are for wine, drapery, slave shoes, and other goods and services. Accounts consist of an account book of William Lowndes containing accounts (1811-1822) with the factorage firm of Kershaw & Lewis (later Kershaw, Lewis & Co.) and estate accounts (1822-1827) of William Lowndes. Land papers include a list (ca. 1774) of South Carolina land grants to Miles Brewton. Other items include personal resolutions and prayers of Eliza Lucas Pinckney (1742-1758); genealogical material (n.d.) regarding the Motte family; and Thomas Pinckney's instructions (1826) for transplanting rice and notes (1826) on an agricultural experiment with flax.
